Radiology Technician: The Career Pre-Requisites
Anyone can be qualified to work as a radiology
technician, but one must first complete the required program in the field of
radiology. One must also posses the needed skills to properly handle the tasks
at hand. Important skills include the ability to build and repair (mechanical
skills), coordination (physical skills), the ability to solve problems using
scientific methods (analytical skills), mathematical skills, ability to
communicate orally, data-gathering and visualization or spatial skills. All
these and more will help ensure that you are fit and ready to carry out your
duties and responsibilities as a radiology technician.
Physical examinations are also conducted before
being employed as an X-ray technician. Excellent vision is paramount in this
field of work since you will be analyzing results of x-ray scans. Individuals
with color vision deficiency will definitely have problems working in this field
as this work widely deals with recognition of colors from scanning equipment and
results. Another important physical attribute is the auditory senses, which also
must be in good condition. The individual’s body must also be strong and
flexible enough to handle different working positions such as bending, sitting,
walking and standing, which are usually done for long hours. Vitality, strength
and endurance are necessary to handle most of the physical work that is involved
such as carrying x-ray equipment and other machines.
Before If you will be hired for a radiology-related job
or even for a radiology educational program, you will usually be tested for your
eye to hand coordination skills, ability to operate machineries, analytical
skills, ability to analyze and interpret information, ability to make sound
decisions, communication skills, recording skills, and the aptitude to adhere to
oral and written directions. Since change is always constant in this field of
work, it is therefore very important that radiology technicians attend seminars
and other related conferences in order to be updated of the changes as they
happen, especially with the technology and medical advancements in radiology.
As a radiology technician, your opportunities can
also extend to other branches of specialization in radiology. These can include
fluoroscopy, CT and MRI scanning, mammography, or even nuclear medicine. It is
important to note however, that in order to work in these special fields, you
need to gain more experience and knowledge; this can usually be achieved as you
progress in your work as a radiology technician. Different employers will also
have different preferences for choosing technician as part of their staff. In
today’s standards, your chances of getting better career opportunities are
higher if you have knowledge, experience and skills in more areas in radiology.
Also, certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists or
ARRT is usually required or preferred by employers before you can apply for a
job. This can be acquired by passing the required exam after you complete an
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Radiology Technician.
